Our Chardonnays remind me of those novels and movies which sneak up on you. Utterly subtle and infinitely memorable.
From our first vintage in 1981, we could see that Chardonnay was a grape very much at home in the ancient clay gravels of the Moutere hills.
The variety ripens well in the warm Nelson summers as it can in many areas. However the power of very ripe Chardonnay can too often result in broad wines with no great charm or finesse.
At Neudorf this rich fruit concentration is balanced by lovely retained mineral acidity resulting from a happy combination of clay gravel soil, clone (small berried Mendosa) and cool autumn nights.
With natural attributes of such power and bright mineral focus, it is for the winemaker to use his skills and imagination to gently craft a wine of texture, balance and complexity, a wine that has a unique sense of place.
That is our aim.
